Huck's and Jim's reasons for escape are both justified because they are escaping from an oppressive and abusive situation. However their methods of escape are much different. Huck's escape is well thought out and executed while Jim's is more spontaneous and he makes it up as he goes along.
Compare circumstances of Huck's escape of those of Jim's escape:
-huck's was far more clever and prepared, because he planned it so he wouldn't have to come back
-planned out better because he has the means to survive
-he set his "death" up so nobody could find him and people wouldn't look with the expectation of finding him alive
-Huck is also far mor intelligent which gives hima better opportunity of survival
-search party for his dead body, but know they don't expect to find him alive, versus Jim who will probably be hunted down
-Jim and Huck don't have anywhere to go
-both are trying to escape expectations and pressure of society
-both are self- reliant and non-conforming, yet rely on each other for support (iPad page 285, chapter 9)
-getting away for social structures and expectations
-both are going "into the wild"
-Huck is safer, because he's white and younger: if he gets captured he will just be sent home while Jim will be punished
-both "think differently" than most (23)
- Jim's escape is more urgent and far more lucky
Compare the circumstances of Huck's escape to those of Jim's escape:
Huck's Escape
Faked his own death
Covered up his escape from the cabin
Plan was thought out, but still impulsive
Jim's Escape
Didn't want to be sold
Had an impulse escape, hasty and rash
Both
Wanted to escape from recent events
Weren't happy with their situations
Jim
Miss Watson was treating him poorly, and was about to sell him to New Orleans
Huck
Pap would have Huck locked up in the cabin and attempted to kill him once
The result to their escapes:
Huck
Was being searched by a "ferryboat full of people"
Jim
No one was looking for him
People were too busy searching for Huck
Huck fakes his death and makes it look like a robbery so that people will not come looking for him. Huck's escape plan is very elaborate in all the steps he takes to make his death look real; he kills the pig, pulls his hair out, smashes the door, and leaves the axe. His escape is more thought out that Jim, who simply runs away, which means that people will still be looking for him. Huck's far more elaborate escape attempt shows that Huck is far more imaginative, he has greater resources, and his escape is not as risky as Jim's, who will soon be sent to New Orleans. Both Huck and Jim are running away due to oppression, Huck is being oppressed by his Pap and Jim is a slave.
